You are asked to see an 18-year-old young woman called Katie, who has been referred to an outpatient gastroenterology clinic with a history of weight loss. Katie appears frustrated as she was initially referred to her local adult mental health team, and after a lengthy wait for an assessment, was told that she was not mentally unwell, which she feels she already knew! Katie reports a 1-year history of significant weight loss, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and amenorrhea, which started after a “stomach bug” and blames a dodgy takeaway. She reports she enjoys food, but sometimes after eating, feels bloating and pain. She denies intentionally trying to lose weight and was happy with her appearance before the weight loss.
