Investigation
Patients will require different investigations depending on which leg they follow on the flow chart. All patients being investigated for a DVT should have baseline blood tests done – full blood count, renal and hepatic function, prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). If starting interim therapeutic anticoagulation, do not wait for blood results. Other mainstay investigations may include: proximal leg vein ultrasound, D-dimer test, CTPA, and V/Q scan. If suspecting a PE, patients will need a chest X-ray and ECG.
