Epidemiology

RA is a common condition, affecting about 1% of the UK population. It is 2-4 times more common in women compared to men and the peak age of onset is 30-50 years old with incidence increasing with age. The peak age of incidence in the UK for both men and women is around 70 years of age. Extra-articular involvement is seen in 40% of cases and skin changes are seen in 30%.
