A 39-year-old man who has recently emigrated from Nigeria presents with sharp, severe stabbing pains in his legs and back. These are short lived, lasting between 1 and 15 minutes. On examination, you note that his pupils bilaterally are poorly responsive to light and are small but do contract to view your finger when moved closer to his face. You also note absent lower limb reflexes and impaired vibration and proprioception throughout his lower limbs.
Given the likely cause of this man’s symptoms, what treatment may be considered?
