A 61-year-old menopausal lady attends her routine mammogram. She is fit and well and works as a solicitor 3 days per week. She regularly drinks 1 bottle of wine over the weekend and does not smoke. She has been on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for 3 years to help with symptoms of brain fog and hot flushes.
The mammogram demonstrates a 1.5 cm cluster of pleomorphic microcalcification in the medial lower quadrant of the left breast, which is confirmed on MRI. Axillary ultrasound shows 1 enlarged axillary lymph node which is biopsied and confirmed to be cancerous. The histology report describes a grade II tumour which is ER negative, PR negative and HER-2 positive.
