An 82-year-old man is brought into hospital by his son.

An 82-year-old man is brought into hospital by his son. The son reports he has become more confused over the last week and has been falling over frequently. Last week he fell and cut his head on the edge of a table and he has been complaining of a headache since then. The patient has a past medical history of vascular dementia, recurrent falls, type 2 diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. His medications include: metformin, gliclazide, bisoprolol, losartan, atorvastatin and apixaban. On assessment, the patient’s observations are normal. A neurological examination reveals mildly reduced power in the right arm and his 4AT score is 8.

A blood test is performed which shows normal inflammatory markers.
