Mr James is a 35-year-old male with a congenital atrial septal defect, of which is asymptomatic and has required no surgical repair for this. He is not on any regular medication and has no allergies. He has a family history of familial adenomatous polyposis, and has been invited for a colonoscopy as part of his bowel screening. He is concerned about the risk of developing infective endocarditis, as he has previously been told that he is at a higher risk of this due to his cardiac defect. During his consultation for his colonoscopy, he asks you whether he will need antibiotics to undergo the procedure. What advice should you give him?
