Mr Owusu, a 53-year-old university professor, presents to the same-day emergency clinic following a GP referral. He reports episodes of dizziness, palpitations and shortness of breath on exertion. On systems review, he also notes 3 months of unintentional weight loss, which he puts down to poor appetite. He was recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes and is an ex-smoker of many years.

He is admitted and an echocardiogram performed which shows a left atrial mass, consistent with a cardiac myxoma and he is urgently transferred to a tertiary centre of possible surgical management.
