A 12-year-old boy attends A&E with his mother. He complains of left-sided hip pain

A 12-year-old boy attends A&E with his mother. He complains of left-sided hip pain, as well as some mild left knee pain, which started approximately 3 weeks ago. He has an obvious limp when trying to walk, and on examination the left leg is slightly shorter than the right, in slight external rotation. His mother complains that he has increasingly struggled to walk to school, and that he has no past medical history, however has grown 8 inches in height in the last 6 months.
