A 16-year-old presents to her GP surgery with severe throat pain
A 16-year-old presents to her GP surgery with severe throat pain. She feels generally unwell with fever and pain on swallowing, and her boyfriend has commented that she had foul smelling breath. She has been feeling unwell for nearly 2 weeks but had thought things would improve so did not seek medical attention. She is not keen for you to examine her throat as opening her mouth causes her pain. However, she agrees and on examination a bulging is apparent on the right-hand side just above her tonsil, which is erythematous and covered in white exudate.
