A 17-year-old young man is seen by his GP following blood tests that were done as he was feeling very tired and had poor concentration

A 17-year-old young man is seen by his GP following blood tests that were done as he was feeling very tired and had poor concentration in his studies at college. He has not lost any weight, feels well in himself otherwise and has a normal, balanced diet. The GP reviews the full blood count which shows low haemoglobin, a low mean cell volume and a raised red cell distribution width. His haematinics are within normal range.
