A 2-day-old neonate delivered by planned Caesarean section has his newborn baby examination. The pregnancy and delivery were uncomplicated, with normal scans throughout. His mother is 25 years old, and this was her first pregnancy. She received no vaccinations as a child. On examination, he is found to have cataracts in both his eyes, and the newborn hearing test finds that he has left-sided hearing loss. Neither of these are known to run in the family.
