A 21-year-old woman is brought by ambulance to A&E by her partner. He had found her unresponsive in their bedroom, after having gone for a nap to “sleep off a migraine”. She is able to be roused, but her GCS is 13/15 – she is very drowsy, and still complaining of a headache. She is febrile on assessment, with a positive Brudzinski’s sign. Subsequent lumbar puncture and CSF analysis confirm meningococcal meningitis. She lives with her partner and two other couples in a shared house.
