A 32-year old woman presents with a 3-day history of a sore throat

A 32-year old woman presents with a 3-day history of a sore throat. She has also been suffering with a ‘tickly’ cough and the glands in her neck are swollen. It is painful to talk loudly, so she has been speaking mainly in whispers, but her voice has been increasingly hoarse nonetheless. The viva examination for her PhD degree is next week, and she is worried she will lose her voice and not be able to complete the examination. She asks if she can have a prescription of antibiotics so that she can get over this illness more quickly.
