A 35-year-old female attends her GP because she is worried about hair loss over the anterior aspect of her scalp. She has noted that her hair is thinning in various areas but not in a patch fashion. Her hair does not itch and she has not irritated it with any chemical agents recently. There is no family history of anything like this as far as she knows. She states that she does not wake up with hair on her pillow, nor is she shedding hair during showering. On examination of her scalp there are no patches or signs of inflammation. Her hair fibres appear to taper towards the ends and are shorter. On pulling of the hair, only a few hair fibres come out (less than 10).
