A 37-year-old woman attends A&E with abdominal pain
A 37-year-old woman attends A&E with abdominal pain. She began feeling unwell yesterday morning and describes the pain as being in the lower central part of her abdomen. She has felt hot, sweaty and nauseous, but has not vomited. She is tachycardic, tachypnoeic, and febrile on examination. She does not think she could be pregnant, as she has been using an intrauterine device (copper coil) as contraception for many years, and had a new coil put in two weeks ago. Her last sexual activity was around a week ago, with her regular long-term partner. She has never been pregnant.
