A 40-year-old man is seen by his endocrinologist regarding follow up after his total thyroidectomy with radioiodine

A 40-year-old man is seen by his endocrinologist regarding follow up after his total thyroidectomy with radioiodine. He presented 5 years previously with increasing symptoms of lethargy, sweating, weight loss and diarrhoea. After a few months he also noticed vague bouts of coughing and a couple of instances of haemoptysis. Following biochemical assessment and ultrasound scan, a biopsy of a nodule found on ultrasound scan confirmed the diagnosis. The report described the tumour as being well differentiated, resembling thyroid parenchyma closely.
