A 42-year old man presents with a two-week history of mouth lesions

A 42-year old man presents with a two-week history of mouth lesions. The lesions consist of numerous irregularly sized and shaped white patches on the sides of his tongue and insides of his cheek. The patches are demarcated by lines within the lesions and have a ‘fuzzy’ appearance. When taking a sample for analysis, you are not able to dislodge the lesions from the surface of the tongue. The patient is an ex-intravenous drug user and was diagnosed with HIV five years ago.
