A 57-year-old man attends a clinic appointment
A 57-year-old man attends a clinic appointment. He initially presented to his GP with a three-month history of constipation, which he had not been able to manage using laxatives or dietary changes. The GP performed some blood tests, which revealed a raised serum calcium level. This test was repeated, and the calcium level remained high – a further hormone profile showed a concurrent rise in parathyroid hormone (PTH), at which point the GP referred the patient to secondary care. The patient attends clinic hoping for a diagnosis, and information about treatment.
