A 59-year-old man attends a GP appointment. He gives a history of having “funny episodes” over the past two weeks – he describes feeling very dizzy during these episodes, which seem to occur when he stands up suddenly, and describes seeing flashing lights in his eyes. The room spins “violently”, and he is forced to lie down for a few minutes, after which the episodes resolve. His other past medical history includes hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which are well-controlled with medication. The GP suspects benign positional paroxysmal vertigo.
