A 75-year-old woman presents to her GP with bright red rectal bleeding. On examination she has a mass at the anal verge which the GP deems highly suspicious. A biopsy is sent for analysis, and unfortunately squamous cell carcinoma of the anus is diagnosed. The patient has an urgent MRI scan to assess the extent of the tumour growth. The MRI report describes a 4cm tumour, involving local rectal and pelvic lymph nodes, with no other lesions anywhere in the body.
