A 9-year-old girl is brought to the GP due to an intractable, persistent, productive cough, nasal congestion and occasional dyspnoea. The sputum is mostly thick and mucopurulent, but she has not had any episodes of haemoptysis. She has suffered from several chest infections in the past for which she has had recurrent courses of antibiotics. She was born in Poland, and postnatally, she suffered from meconium ileus. Examination reveals mild wheeze and inspiratory crackles. Pulmonary function testing reveals a reduced FEV₁ and chest x-ray shows bronchial wall thickening. She has a sweat test performed and it comes back elevated.
