A 26-year-old woman presents to her GP with excess vaginal discharge and occasional postcoital spotting for around 6 months. The discharge is clear and has no particularly offensive smell. She has not experienced any pain and generally feels well in herself. Her first cervical smear was carried out a year ago and this was normal. Her only regular medication is the combined oral contraceptive pill. On speculum examination, there is a red ring around the cervical os. Swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhoea come back as negative.
