A 31-year-old male presents to his GP with a three-day history of fever and myalgia

A 31-year-old male presents to his GP with a three-day history of fever and myalgia. He had previously been fit and well. He reports no headache or urinary problems and there is no significant family history. He does not drink alcohol and the only time he has smoked was on holiday in Ethiopia a month ago. No abnormalities are detected on examination. The GP requests a range of tests, of which the Giemsa-stained thick and thin blood smears demonstrate Plasmodium vivax species.
