A 38-year-old woman attends fertility clinic. She has had polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) since she was a teenager, and has been trying to conceive without success for nearly two years. She has a BMI of 31 and has lost one stone in weight over the past six months in order to improve her chances of conceiving, as well as following other lifestyle advice given for the condition. She is not taking any regular medication for PCOS – she has in the past taken the combined oral contraceptive pill to manage her symptoms.
