A 45-year-old woman attends A&E, complaining of dizziness

A 45-year-old woman attends A&E, complaining of dizziness. The symptoms occur whenever she turns her head, and last for around 30 seconds to a minute. She describes a feeling of the room spinning, and she can feel nauseous and have a headache for up to an hour after the initial dizziness resolves. The doctor performs several tests to assess the patient. One of these manoeuvres, during which the symptoms were brought on by the patient lying on her side, leads to relief of the symptoms once the patient changes sides – and she says she feels “much better” after this is performed a few times.
