A 57-year-old woman is brought to A&E by her sister

A 57-year-old woman is brought to A&E by her sister. Her sister had not heard the patient for several days and went to her house out of concern. She discovered the patient in a state of disorientation, and she did not recognise her own sister. The patient has a history of alcohol dependence, and her sister found several empty vodka bottles in her house. On examination, the patient has significant nystagmus, but no other neurological signs, and is not orientated to time, place or person.
