Emily, a 23-year old female, presents to her GP with heavy menstrual bleeding

Emily, a 23-year old female, presents to her GP with heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea. She is finding it increasingly difficult to manage the pain with analgesics and would like to be started on ‘the pill’ to manage her symptoms.

She has a past medical history of IBS, which is treated with buscopan and occasionally suffers from migraines with aura.

She doesn’t smoke and drinks approximately 4 units of alcohol a week.

On examination, her BMI is 22, and her blood pressure is 120/75.
