You are working as an FY1 on a general surgery rotation. You clerk a patient who has been admitted onto the surgical assessment unit with suspected biliary obstruction, which is subsequently confirmed radiologically. The surgical registrar attends to consent the patient for a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and invites you to observe for your learning. He explains the purpose and nature of the operation, and speaks to the patient about the benefits and potential risks, then asks if she is willing to proceed.
