A 10-year-old child with a 2-day history of polydipsia and polyuria presents to A&E. His mum states he has lost weight over the past few weeks. His urine tests for ketones are positive, his capillary blood glucose level is 24 mmol/L, and a VBG shows acidosis. A diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis is made, secondary to a new presentation of type 1 diabetes. The patient is given the emergency treatment, and their condition stabilises. The child’s weight is 32 kg.
