A 68-year-old female patient has presented to her GP with 2 acute gout attacks in the last 11 months. These attacks were both managed with colchicine in the acute phase. The GP has discussed how excess body weight and alcohol consumption can exacerbate gout flare-ups but the patient has read some information online about a medication that can help prevent these flare-ups and would like to try this. She has a past medical history of acid reflux and had a myocardial infarction 5 years ago. Her current medications are omeprazole, ramipril, bisoprolol, clopidogrel, and aspirin.
Please prescribe one appropriate medication for the long-term management of this patient’s gout.
