Practise saying it out loud, under pressure

At least three full mock interviews. Personal feedback from doctors who have successfully been through the interview. A day built around helping you perform when it matters.

You can spend weeks learning what to say at interview, but still score poorly. This course gives you the chance to practise saying it out loud, under pressure, with someone who knows what a strong performance looks like.

Work through at least three complete mock interviews, learn from the feedback and watch other candidates tackle the same challenges. Leave with a clearer understanding of how you come across and what to work on before your interview.

Knowing the content is only part of your preparation

Recognising a good answer when you read it is one thing. Giving a clear, well-structured answer when the clock is running and someone asks a difficult follow-up question takes practice.

In our 10 years of experience in preparing doctors for interviews, candidates who do the most mocks, particularly with people who have successfully been through the process, tend to score highly and secure the training jobs they want.

That is why we have designed our Obs and Gynae ST1 interview course around practice. We know that we can have the most impact on your interview score by giving you repeated opportunities to answer questions, hear useful feedback and put it into practice.

The day will be intense. You will spend most of it doing mocks or observing other candidates, but by the end you should feel better prepared to walk into your interview and show what you know.

A course for doctors ready to practise

This course is for doctors applying to Obs and Gynae ST1 training who want to improve their interview performance. It is particularly useful if you have started revising but need more practice, more specific feedback or more confidence answering questions out loud.

What you will get from the day

At least three full mock interviews

Every attendee completes at least three full mocks of their Obs and Gynae ST1 interview (2 with course faculty and 1 with a fellow course delegate). Each mock gives you the chance to practise the complete interview experience, including moving between sections, managing your time and responding to follow-up questions.

A full mock means a complete run through the relevant interview format. Your three mocks are your own opportunities to take the candidate role; observing someone else does not count towards them.

Feedback you can put into practice

Your faculty will help you identify what is working and where your answers need more attention. That might be a clearer opening, a more logical structure, a better example or a more concise response.

You can use that feedback in your next mock while it is still fresh, rather than leaving the course with a list of suggestions you have never had the chance to try.

A chance to learn from other candidates

When you are answering a question, it can be difficult to notice how you sound. Watching someone else makes it easier to spot what helps an answer land and what makes it hard to follow.

You will observe other candidates completing mocks and hear their feedback too. Seeing different approaches to the same interview gives you ideas you can use in your own preparation.

Guidance from doctors who have been there

Practising with friends and colleagues is valuable. Our course adds the perspective of doctors who have successfully been through the interview themselves and can help you refine how you approach it.

They know what it feels like to prepare for this next step, and will help you make the most of each opportunity to practise.

A clearer plan for the rest of your preparation

By the end of the day, you should have a better sense of your strengths, the habits that are holding you back and where to focus your remaining practice. The aim is to make your next mock, and ultimately your interview, a stronger performance.

How the day works

We start with roughly an hour covering the Obs and Gynae ST1 interview, general tips and how the course will run. We then move into the mock interviews that make up the vast majority of the day.

You will rotate between taking part in your own mocks and observing other candidates. There will be time to hear feedback and put it into practice as you go. The precise timetable varies depending on how many delegates there are, but every attendee completes at least three full mocks.

Opening session (about an hour)

An overview of the interview, general tips and an introduction to the mock format and course setup.

Mock interview rotations (most of the day)

Complete at least three full interviews as the candidate. Hear feedback on your performance and observe other candidates during your rotation.

Breaks and lunch

Breaks are built around the mock timetable.

Finish (5pm UK time)

Leave with feedback from your mocks and clear priorities for further practice.

Common questions about the Obs and Gynae ST1 interview course

How many mock interviews will I do?
At least three full mocks as the candidate. These cover the complete interview format, rather than three isolated stations or questions. You will also observe other candidates during the day.
How much of the day is teaching?
Roughly an hour in the morning covers the interview, general tips and the course setup. The vast majority of the day is spent completing or observing mocks, with feedback as part of the rotations.
Should I revise before attending?
You will get more out of the day if you have started learning the interview content and thinking about your answers. The course focuses on putting that preparation into practice. You do not need polished answers before you arrive; the mocks are there to help you improve them.
What if I am nervous about practising in front of others?
That is a common reason to attend. You will practise with other doctors preparing for the same interview, with faculty there to give useful feedback. It is an opportunity to work through the nerves before interview day.
Where does the course take place?
Online, on Google Meet, from 9am to 5pm UK time. After booking you will get a Google Calendar invite with the Meet link and a confirmation email. Join with the email address you booked with.
