A course for applicants ready to practise

This course is for applicants to Edinburgh Medical School who want more practice, specific feedback and confidence answering questions out loud.

You do not need polished answers before you arrive. The day is there to help you develop them.

What you will get from the day

Teaching focused on Edinburgh

Understand what to expect from the Edinburgh interview and how to approach it. Your tutors will explain the format, work through examples and answer your questions, drawing on current published guidance and their own experience.

Interview practice with students who have been there

Practise explaining your thinking, choosing examples and responding when a question makes you pause. Your mocks are assessed by current Edinburgh medical students who know what it is like to be in your position.

Feedback you can put into practice

Your tutors will help you identify what is working and where your answers need attention. That might mean a clearer opening, more reflection on an experience or a more concise explanation of your reasoning.

Leave with a clearer idea of your strengths and what to work on before interview day.

A chance to learn from other applicants

Watching other applicants and hearing their feedback helps you spot what makes an answer clear and where it loses focus. You may recognise habits in your own answers and find ways to improve them.

How the day works

Explore how to explain your motivation for medicine, reflect on your experiences and approach questions relevant to Edinburgh.

Afternoon: mocks and feedback

Put the teaching into practice through tutor-assessed mocks, personal feedback and observation.

Closing questions

Ask any remaining questions and plan your next steps. Breaks and lunch are built into the day.
1:1 Mentoring
The live course gives you the frameworks, the core topics and the confidence to handle any interview. To go further, book a 1:1 mentoring session with a current medical student from Edinburgh. They sat the same interview recently, so they can run realistic mock stations in the Edinburgh format, use the same timings, and give you honest, personal feedback on exactly what to improve.

Mentoring is new to Medibuddy, and we're adding new mentors and medical schools all the time. Sessions are booked separately from the live course and run on video at a time that suits you. You can start before the course, use them afterwards to practise what you've learned, or save them for a final mock just before your interview.

Edinburgh medicine interview questions and format

Edinburgh invites shortlisted applicants to a half-day assessment day, which includes a series of short interviews in a multiple mini-interview format. Applicants on the Scottish, rest of UK or Republic of Ireland fee rate are required to attend in person, and the day also gives you an opportunity to find out more about studying medicine in Edinburgh. If you are invited, the school will send you more information about the structure of the day.

Edinburgh bases its assessments on the core values and attributes for medical students set out by the Medical Schools Council, and the structure of the day reflects what clinicians and teachers at the school see as the most important attributes in its students. Reading that statement and reflecting on how your own experiences show those values is a useful place to start.

How to prepare for your Edinburgh medicine interview

Get to know Edinburgh and prepare your examples

Think about why you want to study medicine at Edinburgh and what appeals to you about a six-year programme that combines lectures and tutorials with group-based learning, research and evidence-based medicine, and clinical teaching in general practice. Reflect on your experiences of working with people and how they relate to the values of communication, empathy and compassion that the course emphasises. You do not need polished answers yet, but having examples to draw on gives you a useful starting point.

Put your preparation into practice on our live interview course

Spend a day with current Edinburgh medical students who have successfully been through the interview. Your tutors will work through examples before you practise answering questions out loud in mock interviews. You will receive personal feedback and learn from watching other applicants and hearing their feedback.

Leave with a clearer idea of what to work on, whether that is choosing stronger examples, explaining what you learnt or making your answers more concise.

Book a mentor session for additional 1:1 practice

If you would like more individual support, book a mentoring session with a current Edinburgh medical student. Use the time for mock interview practice and personal feedback on the areas you want to improve. Mentoring sessions are booked and paid for separately; they are not included in the live interview course.

Common questions about the Edinburgh interview course

Will I practise the exact questions Edinburgh will ask?
We use practice questions and scenarios to help you develop your approach. These draw on current published guidance and our tutors' experience, rather than a promise of the exact questions you will be asked.
Is this an official University of Edinburgh course?
No. This is an independent Medibuddy course, not run or endorsed by the University of Edinburgh.
Should I prepare before attending?
Think about why you want to study medicine, what you have learnt from your experiences and why you are applying to Edinburgh. Read the university's interview information too. You do not need to memorise answers.
What if I am nervous about practising in front of others?
That is a common reason to attend. You will practise with other applicants and supportive tutors, giving you a chance to work through the nerves before interview day.
Where does the course take place?
The whole course runs live online on Google Meet, so you can join from home. After booking you will get a Google Calendar invite with the Meet link and a confirmation email. Join with the email address you booked with.
Can I attend if I am under 18?
Yes. The course is designed for applicants to Edinburgh Medical School, including those under 18.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can cancel for a full refund with at least 48 hours' notice before the course starts. To cancel or ask a question, email info@medibuddy.co.uk.
How does Edinburgh decide who to invite to an assessment day?
Two members of admissions staff assess each application against the academic criteria, and this is combined with weighted scores for your UCAT Situational Judgement Test and total UCAT score. Applications are then ranked, and approximately the top-scoring 800 applicants are invited to an assessment day.
Should I tell Edinburgh about a disability or health condition before my assessment day?
Edinburgh invites you to tell it about any condition at the application stage so it knows whether you need adjustments at the assessment day. The school says this does not form any part of the assessment, and you can also contact the Medical School Student Support Office for advice.
