A course for applicants ready to practise

This course is for applicants to Southampton Medical School who want more practice, specific feedback and confidence answering questions out loud.

You do not need polished answers before you arrive. The day is there to help you develop them.

What you will get from the day

Teaching focused on Southampton

Understand what to expect from the Southampton interview and how to approach it. Your tutors will explain the format, work through examples and answer your questions, drawing on current published guidance and their own experience.

Interview practice with students who have been there

Practise explaining your thinking, choosing examples and responding when a question makes you pause. Your mocks are assessed by current Southampton medical students who know what it is like to be in your position.

Feedback you can put into practice

Your tutors will help you identify what is working and where your answers need attention. That might mean a clearer opening, more reflection on an experience or a more concise explanation of your reasoning.

Leave with a clearer idea of your strengths and what to work on before interview day.

A chance to learn from other applicants

Watching other applicants and hearing their feedback helps you spot what makes an answer clear and where it loses focus. You may recognise habits in your own answers and find ways to improve them.

Afternoon: mocks and feedback

Put the teaching into practice through tutor-assessed mocks, personal feedback and observation.

Closing questions

Ask any remaining questions and plan your next steps. Breaks and lunch are built into the day.
1:1 Mentoring
The live course gives you the frameworks, the core topics and the confidence to handle any interview. To go further, book a 1:1 mentoring session with a current medical student from Southampton. They sat the same interview recently, so they can run realistic mock stations in the Southampton format, use the same timings, and give you honest, personal feedback on exactly what to improve.

Mentoring is new to Medibuddy, and we're adding new mentors and medical schools all the time. Sessions are booked separately from the live course and run on video at a time that suits you. You can start before the course, use them afterwards to practise what you've learned, or save them for a final mock just before your interview.

Southampton medicine interview questions and format

Southampton’s selection days for 2027 entry will run from January to the end of February and include an interview and a group task. You must attend in person, as Southampton does not offer online alternatives. Your invitation will confirm the date and timings, and Southampton says dates for the 2027 cycle will be published in the autumn.

At the interview, Southampton draws on the information you gave in your personal statement. Your preparation could cover your motivation and resilience, what you have reflected on and learnt from your life experiences, how you communicate and work with others, and your understanding of the values of the NHS Constitution.

How to prepare for your Southampton medicine interview

Get to know Southampton and prepare your examples

Reread your personal statement and think about how you would expand on each experience, including what you learnt and how it shaped your interest in medicine. Southampton highlights that students gain clinical experience in the first few weeks of the course and that research is embedded in its degrees, so consider what appeals to you about that approach. Because the selection day includes a group task, reflect on how you contribute to discussions and listen to others.

Put your preparation into practice on our live interview course

Spend a day with current Southampton medical students who have successfully been through the interview. Your tutors will work through examples before you practise answering questions out loud in mock interviews. You will receive personal feedback and learn from watching other applicants and hearing their feedback.

Leave with a clearer idea of what to work on, whether that is choosing stronger examples, explaining what you learnt or making your answers more concise.

Book a mentor session for additional 1:1 practice

If you would like more individual support, book a mentoring session with a current Southampton medical student. Use the time for mock interview practice and personal feedback on the areas you want to improve. Mentoring sessions are booked and paid for separately; they are not included in the live interview course.

Common questions about the Southampton interview course

Will I practise the exact questions Southampton will ask?
We use practice questions and scenarios to help you develop your approach. These draw on current published guidance and our tutors' experience, rather than a promise of the exact questions you will be asked.
Is this an official University of Southampton course?
No. This is an independent Medibuddy course, not run or endorsed by the University of Southampton.
Should I prepare before attending?
Think about why you want to study medicine, what you have learnt from your experiences and why you are applying to Southampton. Read the university's interview information too. You do not need to memorise answers.
What if I am nervous about practising in front of others?
That is a common reason to attend. You will practise with other applicants and supportive tutors, giving you a chance to work through the nerves before interview day.
Where does the course take place?
The whole course runs live online on Google Meet, so you can join from home. After booking you will get a Google Calendar invite with the Meet link and a confirmation email. Join with the email address you booked with.
Can I attend if I am under 18?
Yes. The course is designed for applicants to Southampton Medical School, including those under 18.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can cancel for a full refund with at least 48 hours' notice before the course starts. To cancel or ask a question, email info@medibuddy.co.uk.
Can I change my Southampton selection day date?
Southampton says it is unable to offer an alternative date to the one on your invitation. Home applicants are usually invited 2 to 3 weeks before the selection day and international applicants 5 to 6 weeks in advance, so check your email regularly.
Can I request reasonable adjustments for my Southampton selection day?
Southampton will do its best to offer reasonable adjustments, such as venue accessibility, and asks you to email the admissions team before your selection day. It does not offer online or remote interviews or extra time, and all applicants take part in the group task.
